Tom Nolan passed away December 31st, 2020 leaving behind a wife, grown children, grandchildren and thousands of people who loved and followed his passion of STEM education. An oceanographer by trade, Tom saw the best in everyone he met. Through twists and turns in his life, Tom worked in oceanography, space exploration and a host of education related trades.
Tom swapped ocean going ships for spaceships more than 20 years ago. Amongst other things in his life, he was recognised for his STEM outreach work by being awarded the 2019 NASA JPL Bruce Murray Award.
‘I choose to think I am born with obligations to serve past, present and future generations and the planet herself.’ Tom spent his life in service to others. His life made a difference to thousands and thousands of people.
The Tom Nolan INSPIRE Scholarship program has been created in honour of Tom’s legacy.
There are 20 Tom Nolan INSPIRE Scholarships available for Australian students who wish to register for the One Giant Leap Australia Space Mission – June / July 2021.
To be eligible to enter, participants must be registered for the One Giant Leap Australia Space Mission.
Once you have registered, participants apply for the Tom Nolan Inspire Scholarship.
Students must be enrolled in an Australian school or education institution or home school for students aged 10 – 16 on or before 28th June, 2021.
All entries will be judged on creativity and originality. The work should be solely of the entrant and original work.
All entries remain the property of One Giant Leap Australia Foundation and may be used for promotional and media purposes.
Entries that are longer than 250 words may be disqualified.
Each student may only submit one entry.

A small group made up of the family and work colleagues of Tom’s will be the panel for the Tom Nolan INSPIRE Scholarship Committee.
The decisions made by the panel are final.
